The United States Department of Justice announces that Exxon has agreed to pay $1 billion for the clean-up of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska.

1994

A jury in Anchorage, Alaska, blames recklessness by Exxon and Captain Joseph Hazelwood for the ''Exxon Valdez'' disaster, allowing victims of the oil spill to seek $15 billion in damages.

1998

Exxon announces a $73.7 billion USD deal to buy Mobil, thus creating Exxon-Mobil, the world's largest company.
