Pike expedition: Lieutenant Zebulon Pike sees a distant mountain peak while near the Colorado foothills of the Rocky Mountains (it is later named Pikes Peak).

Benjamin Bonneville leads the first wagon train across the Rocky Mountains by using Wyoming's South Pass.

1836

9.1.1836

Narcissa Whitman, one of the first English-speaking white women to settle west of the Rocky Mountains, arrives at Walla Walla, Washington.

The Webster-Ashburton Treaty is signed, establishing the United States-Canada border east of the Rocky Mountains.
