The Kennel Club is founded, the oldest and first official registry of purebred dogs in the world.

Sputnik program: The Soviet Union launches ''Sputnik 2.'' On board is the first animal to enter orbit, a dog named Laika.

1976

10.22.1976

Red Dye No. 4 is banned by the US Food and Drug Administration after it is discovered that it causes tumors in the bladders of dogs. The dye is still used in Canada.

2005

4.24.2005

Snuppy, the world's first cloned dog is born in South Korea.
