In northeast Italy, over 2,000 people are killed when a large landslide behind the Vajont Dam causes a giant wave of water to overtop it.

1970

5.31.1970

The Ancash earthquake causes a landslide that buries the town of Yungay, Peru; more than 47,000 people are killed.

1971

3.18.1971

In Peru a landslide crashes into Lake Yanahuani, killing 200 at the mining camp of Chungar.

2000

11.17.2000

A catastrophic landslide in Log pod Mangartom, Slovenia, kills 7, and causes millions of SIT of damage. It is one of the worst catastrophes in Slovenia in the past 100 years.

A train derailed near Merano, Italy, after running into a landslide, causing nine deaths and injuring 28 people.
