On the Caribbean island of Montserrat, the Soufriere Hills volcano erupts. Over the course of several years, it devastates the island, destroying the capital and forcing most of the population to flee.

1997

6.25.1997

The Soufrière Hills volcano in Montserrat erupts resulting in the death of 19 people.

12.26.1997

The Soufriere Hills volcano on the island of Montserrat explodes, creating a small tsunami offshore.
