Salomon August Andrée leaves Spitsbergen to attempt to reach the North pole by balloon. He later crashes and dies.
1909

Robert Peary and Matthew Henson allegedly reach the North Pole.
1926

Admiral Richard E. Byrd and Floyd Bennett claim to have flown over the North Pole (later discovery of Byrd's diary seems to indicate that this did not happen).
1952

Lieutenant Colonels Joseph O. Fletcher and William P. Benedict of the United States land a plane at the North Pole.
1978

Japan's Naomi Uemura, travelling by dog sled, becomes the first person to reach the North Pole alone.
