Frenchman Jean-Pierre Blanchard and American John Jeffries travel from Dover, England, to Calais, France, in a gas balloon.

Jean-Pierre Blanchard becomes the first person to fly in a balloon in the United States.

Salomon August Andrée leaves Spitsbergen to attempt to reach the North pole by balloon. He later crashes and dies.

Steve Fossett lands in Leader, Saskatchewan, Canada becoming the first person to make a solo flight across the Pacific Ocean in a balloon.
