The Spanish establish a ''presidio'' (fort) in the town that became Tucson, Arizona.

American Old West: On the Sonoita River in present-day southern Arizona, the United States Army establishes Fort Buchanan in order to help control new land acquired in the Gadsden Purchase.

Arizona is organized as a United States territory.

Treaty of Bosque Redondo is signed allowing the Navajos to return to their lands in Arizona and New Mexico.

Indian Wars: after almost 30 years of fighting, Apache leader Geronimo, with his remaining warriors, surrenders to General Nelson Miles in Arizona.
