In a game against the Washington Senators, Boston Red Sox pitcher Ernie Shore retires 26 batters in a row after replacing Babe Ruth, who had been ejected for punching the umpire.

Babe Ruth of the Boston Red Sox is sold to the New York Yankees by owner Harry Frazee.

World War II: Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox enlists in the United States Marine Corps as a flight instructor.

Elijah Jerry "Pumpsie" Green becomes the first African-American to play for the Boston Red Sox, the last team to integrate. He came in as a pinch runner for Vic Wertz and stayed in as shortstop in a 2-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox.
