Imre Nagy, the former Hungarian Prime Minister, is reburied in Budapest.

8.19.1989

Several hundred East Germans cross the frontier between Hungary and Austria during the Pan-European Picnic, part of the events which began the process of the Fall of the Berlin Wall.

Hungary: the last communist government opens the Iron curtain and causes the exodus of thousands of Eastern Germans to West Germany via Hungary (September 11).

NATO invites the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland to join the alliance in 1999.

Former Warsaw Pact members the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland join NATO.

Convention on Cybercrime is signed in Budapest, Hungary.

2002

Enlargement of the European Union: The European Union announces that Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia will become members from May 1, 2004.

2004

5.1.2004

Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia join the European Union, celebrated at the residence of the Irish President in Dublin.
